Facts About the Underground River

The Underground River in Puerto Princesa City is one of the well-known tourist destinations. The tourist influx increased when it is included in the New Seven Wonders of Nature. This article provides information for tourists who would like to see the magnificent beauty and have a feel of the relaxing ambiance of the place.

The Underground River is formerly known as Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSNRP). It is one of the important biodiversities in the Philippines. It is famous for its impressive cave systems, lush old growth rainforest, and wildlife. The most distinguished feature is the 8.2 km navigable subterranean river.

Ecotourism is one of the fastest growing industries. In the Underground River, it provides livelihood opportunities for the local people and also serves as the main source of income for the cave. Over the years, the industry brought forth positive development in the area through the establishments of small to large scales tourism facilities. There is an increase in accommodations, boats for rent, restaurants, and sari-sari stores.

The protection and management of the park is under the jurisdiction of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD). The use and extraction of natural resources are governed by a special law mandated for the province known as the Strategic Environmental Plan for Palawan Act or RA 7611. This law protects not only the Underground River but the whole province which leads the way for it to be declared and considered as the “last ecological frontier”.

The tourist influx is managed by setting limits on the number of visitors who enters the cave on a daily basis.  The management demands earlier bookings and reservations to make rooms for the visitors to enjoy their trips inside the cave.

The tourists are also assisted or accompanied by tourist guides to give briefings, information, and to remind about the policies implemented in the Park.
